What’s the rudest question you can ask a mother?

ABSTRACT: PERSONAL HISTORY about the writer’s dilemmas as a working mother. The writer’s daughter recently checked out a book from the preschool library called “My Working Mom,” which depicted a witch mother who was very busy and had to fly away to a lot of meetings. The two men who wrote this book probably had the best intentions, but the topic of working moms is a tap-dance recital in a minefield. What is the rudest question you can ask a woman? “How old are you?’ “What do you weigh?” No, the worst question is: “How do you juggle it all?” The second-worst question is: “Are you going to have more kids?” Science show that fertility and movie offers drop off steeply for women after forty. The baby-versus-work life questions keep the writer up at night. She has observed that women, at least in comedy, are labeled “crazy” after a certain age. The writer has the suspicion that the definition of “crazy” in show business is a woman who keeps talking even after no one wants to fuck her anymore. The fastest remedy for this “women are crazy” situation is for more women to become producers and hire diverse women of various ages. That is why the writer feels obligated to stay in the business, and that is why she can’t possibly take time off for a second baby, unless she does, in which case that is nobody’s business. Does the writer want to have another baby? Or does she just want to turn back time and have her daughter be a baby again? That night, as she was putting the witch book in her daughter’s backpack to be returned to school, the writer asked her, “Did you pick this book because your mommy works? Did it make you feel better about it?” Her daughter looked at her matter-of-factly and said, “Mommy, I can’t read. I thought it was a Halloween book.”

Parade: You two have never worked together before. How come?
Fey: Well, we were originally going to be in Mr. & Mrs. Smith [the 2005 movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie], but…
Carrell: …but they went with two other people.
Fey: They were unknowns.

Fey: “I had so few dates, and they weren’t really dates. You’d just hang out in a group and try to figure out if someone liked you. The old-school, “would you like to go to the show with me?”–that wasn’t really happening. I think I went to one formal in college with a gentleman who is now not only gay, but extremely gay. I had a good time.”

Fey: “I was reading my daughter a book the other night, and she got very close and very lovingly stroked my face and said [steely whisper], ‘When are you going to die?’ It was menacing. But it was really just a question about life and death.”

Tina Fey: Oh, Liz Lemon would f— it up. Michael Scott would probably be very open, but Liz Lemon would be sour and judgmental and she’d blow it. [Laughs]
Steve Carell: Blow it? With Michael? I don’t think there’s any way she would agree to go out with Michael Scott unless she had been tricked into it. I don’t think you go from Jon Hamm to Michael Scott. Michael Scott should be so lucky.
TF: We should just say, “That’s the series finale this year!”
SC: “We’re planning a little cross-pollination. There’s a tornado, and we all have to huddle somewhere between New York City and Scranton! It makes complete sense!” [Shakes his head.] No way.
TF: It would be so bad. It’s not gonna happen.

Steve Carrell: It was fun. The hardest part was not laughing, frankly….To go for it for, like, five minutes – it was a long time.
Tina Fey: I want to state for my husband’s sake that it was a comedy idea, not an erotic idea. I did pitch: Wouldn’t it be funny if the kiss was as long as the credit sequence? It was fun because we’re both so polite and not only are we both married, but we know each other’s spouses. It was the world’s longest closed-mouth kiss. It was like a tongueless turtle mouth.
